Unless the ring is very large, classes of more than 14 entries should be split. In a small ring, classes may need to be split at a lower number of entries. Classes of more than 6 entries should be scrutinized by show management for class split.
Reason for change
Two: first being safety– Horse and carriage, or pony and carriage combinations moving at working and extended trot require room. Having carriages two and three deep all along the ring, with no where on the rail increases the probability for ugly mishap. Secondly, having a crowded class does not give any competitor a chance to show their horse, it is merely navigating dense traffic. Additionally, no judge can give a fair eye to a class where it is a traffic jam, instead of a performance of the competing duo’s skill, grace and beauty.
PDC Comment: Existing rules provide adequate guidance for safety and fairness.
