Current Wording – PDArticle 217 Championships

217.1 When a championship for a division and/or a show is awarded on points:

b.              All sections/divisions included in the championship must have an equal number of classes.

Suggested Wording

217.1 When a championship for a division and/or a show is awarded on points:
a.              All competitors must be given an equal opportunity to accumulate points.
b.              All sections/divisions included in the championship must have an equal number of classes.
c.              Unless otherwise published in the Omnibus, the following point system shall be used:

Place       Points
1             6
2             5
3             4
4            3
5            2
6            1

Reason for change

To provide an element of consistency with championship points from show to show. This change allows Organizers to use any scheme they wish but if one is not published, this rule provides a scheme to be used.

I support the general purpose of the proposed rule change, but would advise a change in the assignment of points so that the competitor would get a one-point bonus for a blue ribbon. So the assignment of points would be:
    Place Points
    1 9
    2 7
3 6 and the rest the same as proposed.

When we tried championships with equal intervals, we seemed to get a lot of ties. After we gave the first place winner a bonus point, we got fewer ties.

My spacing didn’t work well. Second attempt at chart:

      Place………..Points
      ….1……………..9
      ….2……………..7
….3……………..6 and the rest as proposed

I recently tied at a show and just re figured using Michael Ridges points and it still came out a tie. Not having the extra point for 1st keeps it simple.

    Michael et al,
Thanks for this comment. Your solution *seems* fair. I don’t know the math theory behind it that explains why the odds of ties are reduced. But we seem to have an aversion to ties. Why? What’s wrong with ties? PD217.3 indicates how championship ties are broken. I kind of think ties create some more intrigue and excitement. We should have more drive offs! It might be good for the sport. Barring that, I don’t see much wrong with co-champions either. In any event, you’ll note that this Rule Change allows organizers to use any scheme they prefer as long as it is published in advance.

The huge majority of shows award places 1 – 6. This change would require giving points to those who do not receive ribbons . A general rule awarding points based on the number of ribbons, with the first place winner receiving a bonus point would make this adaptable to any number of ribbons awarded .

I agree with Susan’s comment – I would restrict this to 1-6 placing (I don’t know many shows that award ribbons below 6) – maybe I’m wrong on that?
