Current Wording – Article CD960.5.1

Sufficient red and white compulsory turning flags must be positioned on the course to ensure that all athletes follow the designated tract. Athletes must leave the red flags on their right and the white flags on their left. These compulsory turning flags must be numbered consecutively in each section and they must be placed so they are clearly visible to athletes from a reasonable distance.

At ADS-recognized events, numbered markers shall be distinguished by the following colors. Distinctive shapes are also highly recommended. Numbers may be black or white to provide maximum contrast:

Training division- diamond- white or black background

Preliminary division- square- green background

Intermediate division-circle-red background

ADS Advanced division- triangle-blue background

VSE classes-octagonal- orange background

At ADS-recognized Training and Preliminary division events, there shall be no Compulsory Turning Flags positioned on significant slopes. A relatively easy alternative route shall be provided.

Where one or more divisions or equine types (such as VSEs) must follow a course divergent from the main course, the course must be clearly signed to indicate the correct course for all athletes to follow.

Reason for change

The shaped and colored markers have always been used on k markers to distinguish which division they apply to but not to compulsory turning flags (gates) on course, so the part of this rule that addresses shaped & colored markers belongs under Article 960 4.3. Since all competitors typically follow much of the same course, following this rule for compulsory turning flags (gates) would require many of the turning flags (gates) to have a red or white number plus different shaped and colored markers for each division being offered at the event.

We also do not need a special shape and color for VSEs. We already have partially different courses for each division in order to the different requirements for distance and the number of obstacles. This has always been handled with simple signage to direct athletes along the correct path. This type of signage can be used to direct VSEs to a separate track and is less confusing than adding more shapes and colors.
