Current Wording – Article 920 Shoes
Any conventional type of shoe is permitted.
Lost, damaged or spread shoes may be replaced during Competition B, but no time allowance will be given.
Suggested Wording – Article 920 Shoes
Any conventional type of shoe is permitted. At ADS-Recognized events, boots protecting the sole of the foot are allowed in Competition B.
Lost, damaged or spread shoes may be replaced during Competition B, but no time allowance will be given.
Reason for change
To assist judges, technical delegates, and competitors in determining if hoof boots are permitted in Competition B, without having to obtain permission from the TD or Ground Jury at every competition. The added statement comes directly from Article 25B.3.f in the Pleasure Driving section
Ted Campbell says :
August 6, 2013I agree with this change. I would even include Competitions A and C. Boots protecting the sole of the foot take the place of shoes.

August 6, 2013I agree with this change. Many competitors have horses barefoot for the health and well being when at home, but due to the unknown surfaces at an event , may need sole protection solely for the event. Excluding Competition A makes sense, as the boot could be used as an advantage in dressage to artificially change the equines gait, but in B and C I would not oppose the use of a protective boot, as we currently allow protective wraps.
keithy says :
August 6, 2013I support this change.
These types of boots are basically removable shoes.
iamroberta says :
August 7, 2013Agree with change: as stated succinctly by keithy, “boots are basically removable shoes.”
DanRosenthal says :
August 8, 2013Agree.
dannabe33 says :
August 13, 2013I agree with this change. In this regard, a “boot” is for hoof protection. With more people going barefoot, this is a necessary rule change.
Price says :
August 13, 2013I agree with boots in all phases. I was allowed to use boots for all phases in Ohio because although the cones and dressage were not rocky, you could not get to either on a non-gravel path. thank goodness I had a judge who was reasonable.
Iris says :
August 13, 2013I support this RCS
Laurel says :
August 19, 2013I agree with boots in all phases.
Thank you
Zantke says :
August 20, 2013Friends, I agree with all of you that we allow horses to use hoof boots on the marathon, but they are allowed already! There is no need for this RCS.

August 23, 2013I disagree that this RCP isn’t needed (of course, that’s partly because I submitted it). I don’t think the absence of a rule permitting hoof boots is the same as a rule permitting them. The absence of a rule means that it is up to the discretion of the officials. At a recent CDE, I asked permission from the TD to use boots on the marathon and was begrudgingly given permission. The TD wasn’t thrilled about it and while I got permission, I could just as easily not have gotten it (guess I should have asked the judge?, but I thought the TD was the person I was supposed to ask). It should be clarified so that competitors, judges, and TDs aren’t dealing with the issue at every competition. It’s just for simplification and to make everyone’s job easier.

August 27, 2013I would question the possible ability to change an equine’s way of travel from modified boots…could become a concern….if the boots were allowed in dressage. If there is enough interest to include other phases, I feel this should be tabled and explored further with experts in the veterinary and farrier professions to get a more complete understanding of what’s entailed with the use of boots. You can’t see the inside of a boot, where you can see what’s on an equine’s hoof with a shoe.
Why the designation for ADS recognized shows only? Why the exclusion of non-ADS recognized competitions?
