Current Wording – Article CD901.1.1

At ADS-recognized events, tandems and/or unicorn classes for horses, ponies and/or Very Small Equines (VSEs) may be offered under separate classification. Except for harnessing requirements that are specific to four-in hands, unicorns will compete under the same conditions and requirements as four-in-hands: tandems will compete under the same conditions and requirements as pairs.

Suggested Wording

Classes at ADS-recognized events: Classes offered at any ADS-recognized event may consist of any combination of Division, Equine Height, and Turnout as shown below:

  • Divisions: Training, Preliminary, Intermediate, Advanced.*
  • Equine Height: VSE, Small Pony, Pony, Horse **
  • Turnout: Single, Pair, 4-In Hand, Tandem, Unicorn. ***

*At ADS-recognized events, for the purpose of Classification, Organizers may also offer limit classes at Training and Preliminary Divisions. See Article 916 16 for entry qualifications for all Divisions and for limit classes.

**See Article 930 for description of heights defining VSEs, Small Ponies, Ponies, and Horses. At ADS-recognized events, for the purpose of Classification, the Organizer may combine VSEs, and/or Small Ponies with Ponies, or separate them in up to 3 categories according to height. (Article 930)

*** At ADS-recognized events, for the purpose of Classification, the Organizer may combine Unicorns and/or Tandems with 4-In Hands. At ADS-recognized events, Unicorns will compete under the same conditions and requirements as 4-In Hands.

Reason for change

This article lists the classes offered at USEF very clearly in 901 1, however, 901 1.1 does not clearly list the classes offered at ADS events. With a total of 120 different classes offered when including limit classes, simply listing them would be confusing and impractical. Also, the statement in the current wording that tandems will compete under the same conditions and requirements as pairs is not correct. Only the cones competition considers the type of turnout in competition specifications, and tandems compete under the same specifications as 4-in hands in cones, not pairs. The statement regarding Unicorns is necessary as competition specifications for Unicorns are not otherwise provided in the rules.

I agree, but would like to have a statement added than when different height turnouts are combined into the same class (like small ponies with VSE’s etc) that each turnout needs to get his required speed for his height under the rules.

Hardy, are you thinking of Article 930.4 with regard to the mixed-height turnout?

No, Merridy, not the mixed height turnout, but different size animals in different turnouts in the same class, as in for example a pony pair competing against a horse pair in the same class, in which case each needs their proper speeds but then may compete in one class (when we don’t have enough competitors to fill separate classes).
